Expert diving and swimming lesson for St Mary's School pupils

Divers Sue Scott, Fiona Crouch and Geoff Fridjeon took classes 3 and 4 for a snorkeling lesson in the island swimming pool on 5th December 2007. Sue generously organised the donation and transport of wet suits donated and brought to the island so they continue to be available for the pupils.

Sue and Fiona came along to the school and gave a slide show to show the children the underwater life and tell them about some of the work they had been doing.

All at St Mary’s School would like to say a big thank you to Sue, Fiona and Geoff for taking the time to teach Classes 3 & 4 snorkeling and for bringing them the wet suits. They all thoroughly enjoyed the lesson, the only disappointment being they didn't get time for another lesson, this time in the rock pools!

The divers gave a reception at the Prince Philip Hall before they left on 6 th December. During the reception Sue also gave a talk and slide show about their work, which was enjoyed by all.

St Mary's School pupils miss out on many opportunities and specialist teaching available in South Africa or the UK, and it is brilliant to have specialist equipment and tuition to teach Tristan da Cunha young people skills that may later save a life.

Generous Donation of School Books from The Ragdoll Foundation
Anne Wood, the creative director of the Ragdoll Foundation based in Stratford upon Avon kindly prepared a comprehensive list of children’s books recommended for use in both the library and the classrooms at St Mary’s School. The generous donation of supply of books, together with a one-year subscription to the Carousel magazine book guide has now been shipped to Tristan da Cunha aboard the SA Agulhas thanks to friend of the island Chris Bates, who instigated the project. Generous donations were also made by the magazine editors David & Jenny Blanch, and publishers Egmont UK Ltd.

Education Officer and Head Teacher Marlene Swain comments :

"Staff and pupils at St. Mary's School would like to thank everyone who donated the books for the School.  The books were sorted into age groups by the older children and the Head Teacher.  They were then distributed around the classrooms.  The books have sparked a great interest in reading throughout the School.
The Big Books are very popular in the younger classes as the young pupils enjoy either reading these books themselves or discussing them with their teachers."

Dramatic School Christmas Concert 2006
The School concert, originally scheduled for the evening of Tuesday 5 December, was postponed until the first non-fishing day, which was Friday 8 December. The Doctor and nursing staff were called out halfway through the performance due to the early arrival of Larry & Tracy Swain's baby daughter!
Grandmother and Head Teacher Marlene Swain takes up the story : 'I couldn't leave the children in the middle of the concert as I would let the school down even though I wanted to get to the hospital. I stuck it out and then raced to the hospital. As Allan and I walked through the door they said Tracy had just had a little baby girl
called Shannon Kelly. See Family News Page for photograph and details.
