The Tristan community expresses their condolences following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the 8th September 2022.

Tristan's Tributes following the Death of Queen Elizabeth II

The Chief Islander of Tristan da Cunha, Councillor James Glass, has led tributes to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth from the British South Atlantic archipelago:

"Our whole community is saddened at the death of Her Majesty. Tristan da Cunha was the remotest inhabited part of her realm, but we proudly fly the Union Flag and Queen Elizabeth’s portrait in our Council Chamber inspired all our deliberations, reminding us of a life devoted to public service.
From across the miles, we send our deepest condolences to her family".

As proud members of the British family, and with a long tradition of loyalty, we feel a strong connection to the Queen. In 1962, after a volcanic eruption led to the temporary evacuation of our island, Her Majesty graciously welcomed Tristanian refugees to Buckingham Palace. Her kindness will never be forgotten here and Her loss will be keenly felt throughout our community.

The Queen’s leadership, especially during times of adversity, was unparalleled and an inspiration to us all. She had amazing integrity and an unwavering devotion to service. She was a rock in a world with so much change. Her tireless work for Her people will never be forgotten.

We send our deepest condolences to His Majesty the King and the Royal Family.

The territory will now enter a period of national mourning until the day after the State funeral. A book of condolence will be open from 10:00 on Friday 9 September in the Council Chamber of the Administration Building on Tristan da Cunha. You can also post messages on the Royal Website https://royal.uk/condolence.

Your Majesty, may you rest in peace. God bless and we thank you for your unwavering service.

God save the King
