Tristan marks HRH Prince Philip's Funeral

Report and photos from Co-Administrator Fiona Kilpatrick

The Tristan da Cunha community met on Saturday 17th April 2021 for a small service, where a minute's silence was kept in remembrance of HRH The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh. The service took place at the flagstaff in front of Prince Philip Hall, named in his honour, where HRH laid the foundation stone during his visit in 1957.

The ceremony started at 14:00h local time, as the funeral service began in the UK. Administrator Steve Townsend delivered a eulogy. Anne Green and Carlene Glass-Green, lay ministers for the island's Catholic and Anglical congregations, read prayers for the Duke, HM The Queen, and all their family.

It was particularly good that Harold Green and Trina Repetto were there, as they are among the people who remember the Duke's visit to Tristan.

The Duke's funeral service itself was very moving. Such occasions always recall one's own losses, but the simplicity and elegance of this one were wonderful, as were the music and readings.

Tristan will also hold a remembrance service on the 25th April at St Mary's Church for the whole community.
