Tristan da Cunha is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. It is famously known as the world's remotest inhabited island. The island lies 1500 miles west of Cape Town and is accessible by a seven-day journey by sea from Cape Town.

Tristan House in Vredehoek, Cape Town (below right) is owned by the Tristan da Cunha Government and provides self catering accommodation for islanders visiting Cape Town for medical or official reasons, or on vacation.

Job Summary

This is a full time job based in Cape Town. The duration of the contract is for 12 months, with the option to extend for a further period of 12 months. This role requires someone who is hardworking, flexible to work out of ordinary working hours, flexible for call outs and resilient to withstand extreme work pressure.

Roles, Duties & Responsibilities

The job holder is expected to:

  • Work closely with the Tristan House Manager on the instructions of Tristan da Cunha Government authorities
  • Coordinate logistical arrangements such as transporting of Medevacs to and from the ship, to and from Doctors' appointments, to and from the Airport
  • To assist the Tristan House Manger in executing duties of maintaining the pristine welfare of Tristan Citizens in Cape Town as Medevacs, Vacation or on official Government business
  • Ensure that accommodation for Tristan citizens or Government officials is booked on time
  • Facilitate smooth transfers of Tristan citizens to and from the ship, to and from the Airport.
  • Ensure a high standard of maintenance for the Tristan House buildings and grounds including ensuring repair work is sourced appropriately and in accordance with Financial Regulations and completed in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure that Tristan house meets South African required safety standards, all electrical & plumbing equipment is regularly checked by suitably qualified individuals.
  • Ensure the House and Grounds are kept to a high standard of cleanliness and are presentable, and that it is furnished with the necessary equipment for the residents of the house.
  • Assist Tristan House Manager in coordinating with Camogli Hospital Manager & Doctors to ensure Medevacs Doctors' appointments bookings are executed timeously and all appointments fulfilled
  • Assist Tristan House Manager in compiling a detailed weekly Medevacs Doctors' appointments update report to the Camogli Hospital Manager and Doctors
  • Establish and maintain strategic alliances with reputable hospitals, doctors, service providers, TdC Government authorities and TdC citizens to ensure excellent service delivery
  • Manage all house bills and utilities ensuring they are working and are paid for appropriately. Including ensuring adequate insurance provision for the property and vehicle. Liaise with service provider where necessary to ensure adequate service.
  • Ensure the pool is maintained to a high standard and is safe and clean for use.
  • Ensure the contents of the house, including furniture, fixtures and fittings are regularly inspected to ensure they are accounted for and in good condition.
  • Maintain the vehicle ensuring it is safe and fit for use, including organising suitable insurance and that regular services are carried out by qualified professionals.
  • Provide an 'on call' service responding to out of hours needs such as security call outs and emergencies. This is limited to emergencies only, the job holder is not required to respond to islanders requests at unsocial hours unless it is an emergency, involves the safety of the house or was pre-arranged with the authorisation of the Chair of the Tristan House Committee.
  • Co-ordinate with the Tristan Administrator's Assistant to ensure you are aware of incoming and outgoing islanders and manage, co-ordinate and arrange accommodation bookings for them within, or if necessary, outside of Tristan House
  • Ensure all islanders are fully settled, are provided with a 'welcome pack' consisting of the House rules, a small amount of basic food supplies and the feedback form.
  • Assist all the travelling islanders with visa applications and renewals for their stay in South Africa, arranging extensions where necessary.
  • Provide transport for all travelling islanders between Tristan House and the ship/airport in a timely fashion ensuring islanders are aware of the travel plans and arrive on time for their ongoing passage as far as possible.
  • Assist Islanders with medical arrangements when within South Africa. This includes co-ordinating with the hospital as regards registering them at the medical institution or practitioners, their appointments and billing, providing transportation to/from appointments (ensuring they arrive on time) for them and any supporting travellers, obtaining and renewing prescriptions and support for islanders admitted into hospital
  • Subject to other priorities, assist Islanders with obtaining supplies through a twice weekly shopping trip.
  • Assist with other reasonable requests where possible but these should not interfere with the main duties.
  • Support with the transportation and accommodation of Government Officials, including ex-patriate officers when required and in the absence of the officer normally responsible for this role.
  • Assist the Government of Tristan da Cunha with Cape Town based ad hoc tasks such as the delivery or transport of parcels to/from shipping agents or suppliers as necessary.
  • Execute any other reasonable duties that may be delegated by Tristan House Manager/ TdC Government authorities.

Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Home Care/Nurse Aid Certificate
  • Facilities or Property Management Knowledge
  • Valid Driver's Licence
  • Five years Driving Experience
  • Ability to speak and write English proficiently
  • Computer Skills in Excel and Word
  • Good communication and stakeholder relationship management skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to work in a diversified team

Subsequently important, the candidate must have a valid driver's licence coupled with five years driving experience in South Africa.
