Fur Seals at Pigbite

Photos from Administrator Sean Burns

Sean Burns sent these photos taken on Saturday 24th November 2018 of Sub-Antarctic Fur Seals on the boulder beach at Pigbite whilst on a walk from the village. Fur Seals were hunted out on Tristan in the early 19th Century, but numbers have recovered significantly. There is a breeding colony at The Caves in the south of the island, and groups of seals also frequently haul up on Settlement Plain beaches, particulaly east of the 1961 lava flow at Pigbite, and on beaches off the Patches Plain. We leave the images to speak for themsleves:

This is the first of three wildlife pages that we plan to publish in the next few days.
