Explore Tristan settlement with 360 degree views

First ever Google Street View of Tristan da Cunha

Report and photos from Simon Butters

The first ever Google Street view for Tristan da Cunha is now live on Google Maps. Showing the world's most remote Settlement as it's never been seen before.

Not only does this record the village (and the road, dubbed the 'M1' to the Potato Patches) in time but also gives the ability for people to "digitally" explore the island, providing a realistic, 360-degree view.

The filming occurred during Simon Butters' visit to Tristan da Cunha in September & October 2024.

The Google Street View took a couple of attempts. Our first run was on a rather cloudy day which I fully intended to use, however we had a wonderful sunny day on the 28th September and decided that it would look much nicer on a clear day. The route took roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes and produced over 60GB of data over the 7.2 mile distance.

It was an enjoyable drive, waving to somewhat bemused people as we passed them through the village, apologetic as we were unable to stop and chat while the camera was rolling.

Processing was complicated and involved many conversions and GPS plotting to meet Googles requirements.
