How the TDCA works
How we are organised
Membership is open to all who have an interest in Tristan da Cunha. They include Tristan islanders
(resident and overseas), former expatriates who have worked on Tristan, and many visitors and friends
throughout the world.
We are organised by a committee of trustees elected at the Annual General Meeting. Trustees are volunteers who give of their time freely, don’t receive expenses for travel or accommodation, and use their own IT equipment.
Several trustees work, and those retired often have other caring and volunteer roles.
Islanders living overseas have often served on the committee, and the present Chief Islander, Ian Lavarello,
was a committee member when living in the UK 1991-1993.
TDCA annual accounts are always presented and agreed at AGMs. Full 2024 accounts are available for
download both on the Charity Commission and our own website where they can be checked by members
and the general public. Please continue to support us by renewing your membership, encouraging others to
join, and getting involved by att ending gatherings and offering to help us support the Tristan community.
Trustee Meetings
Trustees meet by Zoom during the year and hold a face-to-face meeting on the Friday afternoon prior to the Annual Gathering during which an Annual General Meeting takes place. Agendas and minutes are distributed by email.
Wider Consulation
Further recent developments have been: the creation of a Support Group, who are kept up-to-date with
plans, consulted about issues and help run Annual Gatherings and the establishment of an Archive subgroup
to assist the island develop a comprehensive historical archive.
Special General Meetings
A first Special General Meeting by Zoom was held successfully in September 2022 when membership approval was required. Afterwards an 'Any Questions' session took place with pre-submitted questions being put to the Tristan da Cunha Administrator Jason Ivory. This enabled direct communications between members across the world (eg USA, South Africa, Iceland, Switzerland, Netherlands, Ireland, UK) with Tristan da Cunha for the first time. We aim to repeat this experiment in the future.
