Event organised by the Marine Management Organisation

Blue Belt talks at London Zoo

Report and photos from Tristan Government UK Representative Chris Carnegy

On January 16th, Tristan's UK Representative Chris Carnegy took part in an event organised by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). Held at London Zoo, it was aimed at glimpsing the future of 'Blue Belt' fishery surveillance and enforcement after the Overseas Territories' new marine protection schemes are all in place in 2020. Partners explored what technology might be part of the OTs' future toolkit.

Given its vast size, it is believed that policing Tristan's ocean zone will always require a solution such as satellite monitoring, with compliance achieved through work with flag states and regional fisheries management organisations.

Delegates were shown a presentation by the Ocean Mind monitoring organisation that mapped shipping activity in Tristan waters.

A further session later this year will look at specific (existing and emerging) technology ideas.
