Tristan da Cunha was given a warm welcome by the people of Gibraltar as part of their National Day celebrations on 10th September 2023.

Chief Islander James Glass asked me to represent him at the event, the first if its kind since before the Covid pandemic.

A crowd of several thousand people cheered when Tristan was announced among the Overseas Territories represented.

and Falklands representative Richard Hyslop.

The event brought an encounter with UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who was holidaying on the Rock. I thanked him for his support for Tristan.

The programme of activities included an OTs’ summit and a discussion on constitutional affairs, where I highlighted Tristan’s call for more shipping links and outlined the island’s thinking on its relationship with the UK.

Other highlights included a dinner hosted by Gibraltar’s governor, and a 21-gun salute to mark the anniversary of the accession of King Charles.
