Calshots united at remembrance event

Wooden memorial crosses were planted in Westminster on 6th November 2023 on behalf of two places linked by the name Calshot.

The occasion was the opening of the House of Commons Speaker's 'garden of remembrance', when crosses for many communities began to be installed in the lead-up to the anniversary of Armistice Day.

I placed a cross on behalf of the government and the people of Tristan da Cunha.

Also at the ceremony was New Forest East MP Dr Julian Lewis, whose constituency includes Calshot - where Tristanians lived during the volcano evacuation years and whose name is given to the island's harbour. Dr Lewis is the influential chairman of the UK's Intelligence and Security Committee, and is knowledgeable about his area's links with Tristan da Cunha.

Tristan will have a high profile during Remembrance week: on 12th November I will lay a wreath at the London cenotaph on behalf of the island and our wider Territory.
